SDS Solutions
The Dell XC Series platform is a scale-out cluster of high-performance nodes each running a standard hypervisor and containing processors, memory and local storage (consisting of SSD Flash and high capacity SATA disk drives). The Dell XC Series platform is powered by Nutanix software and managed through the Nutanix Prism interface.
Dell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces (DSMS)
DSMS is a comprehensive offering of validated and tested Dell hardware with Microsoft Storage Spaces technology. The Dell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces solution includes both SOFS and converged architecture options, which let you run your virtual or physical workloads directly on the solution. This Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) and converged solution is the result of close collaboration between Dell and Microsoft. DSMS includes performance and capacity sizing, end-to-end fulfillment, deployment and solution-level support.
Founded in 2005, Nexenta is software defined storage vendor that provides NexentaStor, a storage operating system based on OpenSolaris and OpenStorage ZFS technologies. NexentaStor software runs on industry standard hardware and delivers block (iSCSI and Fibre Chanel) and file (SMB and NFS) storage services.
The Dell – Nexenta offering incorporates NexentaStor software with the Dell PowerEdge 13th generation server platform to provide highly scalable solutions for enterprise workloads, including:
- VMware cloud backend storage
- OpenStack and CloudStack backend storage
- Generic NAS file and Home Directory storage
- Near-line archive and large scale backup repositories
These solutions are available in flexible hardware configurations that scale from a few terabytes to petabytes and come with comprehensive data management capabilities such as replication, automatic read and write caching, replication, unlimited snapshots and cloning, and inline data reduction.

Dell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces (DSMS)- Validated, Flexible, Simple and Solution Supported.
What's New
Dell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces (DSMS) has been extended from its original SOFS (Scale-Out File Server) offering
The DSMS solution requires unique solution SKUs called solution IDs. These DSMS solution IDs are required when ordering a DSMS configuration, which is the only way to get access to the benefits such as performance and sizing, optimized server and storage components, single-payload updates, and solution-level technical support. If you are in a geographical area outside of the US, the solution IDs are not available at this time; however, you may reference the configuration name instead. For more information, seeDell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces Configurations and Solution IDs.

This document provides information about supported software, firmware, and hardware versions for the Dell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces solution (DSMS). The DSMS is a software-defined storage (SDS) platform that uses Microsoft Storage Spaces and Dell servers, storage, and networking to create a scalable file-server solution.
You can use this solution as a Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) or as a Converged solution. The SOFS solution uses the SOFS role with clustered Storage Spaces, in a disaggregated solution, where the compute workloads run on client servers separate from the storage nodes. The client servers use Server Message Block (SMB) to access SOFS file shares on the storage nodes. The Converged solution uses the Hyper-V role with clustered Storage Spaces, where the compute workloads run directly on the server cluster nodes.
This document is intended to support DSMS configurations, which have unique solution SKUs called Solution IDs. These DSMS solution IDs are required when ordering a DSMS configuration, and to access the benefits such as performance and sizing, optimized server and storage components, single-payload updates, and solution-level technical support. If you are in a geographical area outside of the US, the solution IDs are not available at this time. However, you may reference the configuration name instead. For the complete list of configuration solution IDs, see Dell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces Configurations and Solution IDs available at Dell Tech Center.
DSMS solution rules (Back to top)
This section contains consideration rules when using DSMS.

SOFS is not supported when running concurrently with Hyper-V. You must not install the SOFS role and Hyper-V role on the same server. | X |
Recommended SMB clients are Windows Server 2012 or later to use SOFS features. | X |
Each SOFS or Converged configuration must use only one type of storage enclosure. You cannot mix DSMS 1400, DSMS 1420, and DSMS 3060e in the same hardware configuration. | X |
Supported storage enclosures (Back to top)
Each storage enclosure has two Enclosure Management Modules (EMMs). Both EMMs must have the same firmware version. You must upgrade each EMM individually. EMMs do not automatically synchronize firmware versions.
